Meet Sam, Chapter’s project co-ordinator for our Community Wellbeing Garden

What inspired you to join Chapter?

I cared for my mum from the age of 17 who had severe mental health issues until she died when I was 40. There was a lot of stigma around mental health in the 1980’s, very little support for our family and a general ‘shut the front door and cope’ mentality (which wasn’t helpful for mum or us). I love that Chapter promotes being positive about mental health.

Also, purple and orange are my favourite colours!

What’s the best bit about your work?

Engaging with people makes me feel like the sun is out everyday and unicorns are flying high in the sky.

Sam, what’s your own wellbeing ‘go-to’?

I look after myself by putting on a face mask (preferably mud/clay). Sitting quietly for 15 minutes, feeling my skin tighten and then washing it all away really helps to press my reset button internally.

Tell us something unusual, or unexpected, about you that not many people would know.

I have a wonderful collection of Rupert Bear items. Lots of books, some pottery and even flashcards to learn the highway code!

What’s your favourite inspirational quote for life?

One life live it.

What 3 things are you most grateful for?

Family, cuddles with our dog and laughter

Lastly. What would you say to someone who’s thinking about contacting Chapter for support?

It will feel like the hardest thing to pick up and the phone and talk to strangers. Pretend to dial the number and talk out loud, how you are going to introduce yourself. When you’re ready. Do it for real. I can assure you that the team are very friendly and will support you on your journey.
